Active Listening

In music, active listening refers to a conscious effort to listen to a piece of music. It allows you to deconstruct a piece and see how all the gears are working. We all, by nature, are passive listeners, whether it’s the natural sounds of the world or a song to pump us up or get us inspired, we are listening all the time with no effort. In music production, we NEED to be active listeners. It’s a necessity. It’s a skill that needs to be practiced and nurtured. Closely listen to a piece of music and try to pick out every little detail. This can be instrumentation, structure, style, technique, lyrics…just to name a few. Whether it’s left, right, up, down, in the distance or right in front of you, the more easily you are able to pull out different details of a track and lay them out on the dance floor, the more your music production skills are going to improve. Take time, find a quiet place, and listen actively. #musicproducer

P.S. This goes for having a newborn as well 👧🏻😊
