EQ or Compression? Which comes first???

Which comes first? No real right answer, but...here's a good starting point.

Compression is a color tool and teller of truths.

EQ is a handyman.

General rule:

1. If the track already sounds good, add compression first to bring up the good stuff then add a little eq to fix the problem areas.

2. If the track doesn't sound good, fix the bad stuff with EQ first, then add the compression because you don't want compression bringing up the bad stuff.
